Connecting Aerospace Interests

PNAA's Women in Aerospace Luncheon Doubles in Size, Packs Future of Flight Aviation Center

135 aerospace women and five brave men packed the Future of Flight Aviation Center to hear leaders from Boeing, Rolls-Royce and Hexcel Corp discuss their experiences in the aerospace industry as well as the opportunities that exist for women.

After a snappy three minute Powerpoint presentation featuring photos of over 50 local women in a variety of aerospace jobs, PNAA’s Chief Operating Officer Melanie Jordan introduced Fiona McKay, Rolls-Royce's Director of Customer Business.  McKay provided a very thorough update on the global engine manufacturer and captivated the audience with a candid look at her journey through aerospace.  Attendees whipped out pens and paper to take notes as she provided her top 10 tips for career management.

Kristina Hayek, Hexcel Corporation's U.S. Regional Instructional Design and Development Manager, followed McKay's presentation with an upbeat overview of composites and Hexel Corporation's leading role in the industry and the region.  Hayek's recollection of her career path from high school, college, grad school to working mom energized the audience. She recounted an abundance of opportunity and explained how she balanced education, career, and children.

PNAA's Keynote Lunch Speaker, Jenette Ramos, Vice President and General Manager of Boeing Fabrication, agreed that the opportunities for women in aerospace are plentiful.  She pointed to the airlines’ needs for over 38,000 new aircraft by 2034 -- valued at over $5.6 trillion. Boeing, she said, is dedicated to bringing more women into the workforce and there is an abundance of opportunity.

Janicki2Norine Murray, Senior Operations Manager for Boeing’s Composite 777X Wing Center was the perfect closer to an inspiring event.  Her energetic and witty presentation was engaging and informative.  She chronicled her beginnings in Slimjim, a small town in northern Canada were she became the only female machinist.  She worked hard, had a solid reputation and worked her way to Boeing. Twenty five years later, she finds herself at the helm of the 777X Composite Wing Center where Boeing’s most efficient wings will be produced.

Murray’s journey resonated with attendees.  Aimee Faulkes, from Janicki Industries said, "While all of the speakers were intriguing and engaging, I particularly enjoyed hearing Norine Murray speak. She was well informed, witty and had a great sense of humor. Additionally, the information she shared on the 777X program was above and beyond the level of detail you typically hear at Aerospace conferences."

Faulkes said, "Having an all-woman event changed the networking dynamic. The buzz from the excitement in the room was astounding. I was able to catch up with old friends and connect with a variety of new contacts.  Janicki’s decision to send a group of ladies from all areas of the company to this event was priceless."

Because of the popularity of this event, PNAA is planning a full day Women in Aerospace Conference in Spring of 2016, said Melanie Jordan.
